Onyx is the striped, semi-precious agate variety with alternating black and white bands. The name is derived from the Greek onux, meaning 'nail' or 'claw' in reference to the colour of the mineral, and was used by the Romans for a variety of stones including alabaster, chalcedony and what is now called onyx marble. As with other chalcedony, onyx is formed by the deposition of silica at low temperatures from silica-rich waters seeping through fissures in other rocks. Natural onyx comes from South America and India.
