BLACKENED SILVER, HERE ARE SOME PRACTICAL TIPS TO AVOID IT.

Have you also happened to have silver jewellery that you can no longer wear because it has blackened?

Don't worry, it's normal. Especially if you don't know how to treat and maintain them.

You have to know that silver turns black due to the oxidation process of some of its materials. In fact, 925 silver jewellery contains 925 parts silver and 75 parts other metals. These will tend to oxidise and give that unpleasant colour.

Thais Bernardes tells us, below, some practical tips to prevent 925 silver from blackening.

- When you are not wearing them, protect your jewellery by placing it in its case and storing it away from other objects that could damage it.

- Be careful of water. Do not wear jewellery when washing or when going to the pool.

- Do not put jewellery in contact with creams or perfumes. Try to use these products first and then wear the jewellery.

- Do not polish jewellery with alcohol. Simply use a dry cloth and polish them very carefully, avoiding scratching them.

- In summer, perspiration containing acid PH may oxidise silver jewellery, so wear them in moderation and remember to dry them before storing them in their case.

If you already have oxidised 925 silver jewellery, you can try dissolving 50 grams of bicarbonate of soda in a litre of hot water, let it cool and then immerse the jewellery in it. Rinsing them after a few minutes will make them shiny and bright as before.

We hope you find this information useful, but remember that if you need assistance in cleaning already oxidised silver jewellery, you can contact us directly by writing to [email protected]
