Located in the green hills of southwest Colombia, the Agro-Mining Cooperative of the Municipality of Iquira is an example of how coffee, agriculture, livestock and gold mining can coexist in a sustainable way. Gold mining has provided the community with diversified economic alternatives in which the community and members alternate between artisanal mining and agriculture. Iquira's miners are harnessing this relatively new community activity to foster positive local change. Because artisanal mining can have negative effects if not done correctly, the cooperative members were eager to learn about and implement the responsible social and environmental practices they learned through their Fairmined certification. The cooperative supports approximately 450 people through their work. With increased income from mining, the community has more opportunities and an enhanced long-term business vision.
