THE STONE OF THE MONTH OF MAY

stone of the month of May

As a good-luck stone for the month of May, the emerald, a symbol of rebirth, is believed to grant its owner foresight, luck and youth. Emerald, derived from the word 'smaragdus', literally means 'green' in Greek.

Like aquamarine, emerald is a variety of beryl, a mineral that grows with six sides. The emerald green colour can range from light green (although there is some debate as to whether these very light beryls are really emeralds) to a deep, rich green. Emeralds are also similar to aquamarine in the way the colour appears on jewellery, depending on a good cut by an expert gemologist.

Because the emerald is a deep green colour, its use as part of traditional jewellery is widely known specifically in Victorian jewellery. The colour of the gemstone represents a wide range of aspects of life and are not limited to religious, social, Christian and biblical symbolism. The renewal of life as well as that of nature is commonly considered the symbolic meaning of the emerald's deep green colour.

But this is not all that the May gemstone has to offer. There are a wide range of other characteristics that are also associated with the gemstone. Such characteristics may include youth, foresight and luck.

Happy May!
